I don’t even live in Toronto, but this story irritated the hell out of me this morning as I took the bus to work. I picked up my free copy of http://www.dose.ca and Ka.nye We.st is on the cover. I use to have a huge crush until I kept reading about his huge ego. Anywho it’s all about how Flow 93.5 was censoring his new song because of issues of race. Let me break it down.
ISSUE: The final verse of Kan.ye’s song “Golddigger” describes a woman who keeps it real and stays with her man while he is poor. However, K.anye twists it when he says “But when he get on, he’ll leave your ass for a white girl.”
FLOW POSITION: That the issue of black men “trading up” to a white girl is a sensitive issue. So they want to censor the word. And to quote the Program Director “The line might be a little sensitive to some people, so we muted it a little bit.”
MY POSITION: Give me a fucking break. The issue is sensitive?? You must be joking. You have rappers talking about traveling all over the world fucking groupies, but mentioning a very real phenomenon in North America is sensitive? They need to get over themselves. Who is going to be offended? The white girls who are being used as a trophy, or seen as better than just because they have white skin, or the black men who have embraced white, supremacist thinking to such an extent they actually believe they are “trading up” when they marry/date a white girl. Flow 93.5 needs to check themselves. They are so full of crap. So they are worried about offending white girls when the city is 52% visible minorities? I didn’t realize that they were so sensitive. Or is the black men who don’t like to feel like they are being cut down? It definitely can not be the black women because Flow 93.5 hasn’t cared about them from the jump so why would they start now. Just my two cents.

Answer: Themselves. Nobody likes to be called out on themselves, and sometimes when the mirror is placed a lil’ too close you don’t really like what you see anymore.
I’m not a big Kanye fan, especially when I saw him perform and he forgot half his lyrics (sidebar: how u gonna forget ur lyrics…when ur only performing from one album??)
But sometimes you gotta call it like you see it!
